Brick murals
2006
Project Area: Exposition/University Park Project Area
Project: USC Galen Center
Project Location: 3400 S. Figueroa Street
Project Type: Developer
Description:
These seven sculptural murals for the Galen Center, a sports facility at University of Southern California, were built using a practice called brick sculpture where intricate designs are carved into blocks of clay, fired and then set like bricks. The verticality of the space for the murals inspired the use of stylized elongated figures resulting in 11’ 4” wide x 46’ 8” tall carved brick bas-relief murals that were integrated into the building’s architectural brick work. Each panel depicts activities that take place in the Center such as athletics, performing arts, and commencement. These murals enhance the public space and convey inspirational imagery promoting achievement in the arts, education, sportsmanship, and mentorship.
