Walk Earth Talk
1991
Project Area: CBD/Financial Core
Project: Citicorp Plaza Phase I
Project Location: 725 S. Figueroa Street
Project Type: Developer
Description:
In collaboration with poet Lucille Clifton, thirty 11" square granite plaques incised with Clifton's poetry were laid into the floor of the pavilion behind the office tower facing 7th Street. The individual pavers have letters and words in different colors, sizes, and fonts. These pavers form word sequences that can be assembled and reassembled into poems.
"Walk Earth Talk" recognizes the viewer as an integral part of the delicate balance of nature. The project's intent was to bring the spirit of a nurturing earth mother into a space defined as male by its surrounding tall, powerful buildings; therefore subtly, but fundamentally, changing the character of place without altering its outward appearance drastically.
