Description:

This Project was a collaborative effort between Council District 10, Bureau of Street Services, and the Community Redevelopment Agency.  Designed by the City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Street Services architect Anne Kim, the project was conceptualized with considerable input from local residents and merchants.  The project provided streetscape improvements along a 1.1 mile length of the Olympic Boulevard corridor between Vermont and Western Avenues.  This 17 block area along Olympic Boulevard has been known as Koreatown since the early 1970s and is now home to the annual Korean Parade and Fall festival.  Four architectural gateways were designed as part of this project to define Koreatown in Los Angeles and welcome visitors to this distinct neighborhood.  The design concepts originated from the Korean flag which features the Yin & Yang symbol signifying balance and harmony, and patterns from traditional Korean architecture.  Other streetscape elements include light fixtures, decorative crosswalks, and paving medallions which commemorate the 1932 Olympic Games, after which Olympic Boulevard was named.

Artist Profile

The Bureau of Street Services is part of the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works which is the City’s third largest department.  The Bureau is made up of six divisions: Engineering, Lot Cleaning, Resurfacing, Street Maintenance, Urban Forestry, and Street Services Investigation & Enforcement.  Its services include streetscaping, bus stop improvements, a street banner program, landscaping maintenance, street and sidewalk repair and maintenance, among many others.
