Artist Profile

Carl Stone, a Los Angeles native and graduate of the California Institute of the Arts (BFA 1975), is arguably one of the leading composers living in the United States today.  Credited as a pioneer in the field, Stone has used computers in his live performances since 1986.  He is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Foundation for Performance Arts. Numerous theater directors and choreographers, including Hiroshi Koike, Akira Kasai, Bill T. Jones, Setsuko Yamada, Ping Chong, June Watanabe, Kuniko Kisanuki, Rudy Perez, Hae Kyung Lee, and Blondell Cummings, have used the artist’s music.  Stone now divides his time between San Francisco and Japan and is currently a professor in the Information Media Technology Department at Chukyo University School of Information Science and Technology in Japan.
