Description:

Inspired by the nearby port's automated cargo cranes and lighthouse, the artist created a 30' 4 7/8" interactive sculpture called Mojo. Located on the corner of W. 7th St. and Centre St., Mojo reacts to its environment. During the bright daylight hours, Mojo presents itself as an elegant sculpture. However, as light levels decrease throughout the day, Mojo comes to life. Through its playful usage of surveillance technology, Mojo tracks passersby with its robotic arm, at times beaming a light on randomly selected pedestrians following them with its light. Christian Moeller's sculpture activates its nearby public space, forging connections with passersby and creating a sense of community.

Artist Profile

Born in 1959 in Frankfurt am Main, Christian Moeller studied architecture at the College of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt and as a scholarship holder under Gustav Peichel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After working in the Stuttgart architect’s office of Behnisch and Partner, he commenced as guest artist in Peter Weibel’s Institute for New Media in the Städel School in Frankfurt. In 1990, he founded his own architect’s office and media laboratory in Frankfurt. From 1995 to 1997, he headed the ARCHEMEDIA research institute at the College of Design in Linz, Austria. He founded his own studio and media laboratory in 1990 in Frankfurt and in 2001 moved his practice to Los Angeles where he now lives and works. Lars Müller Publishers recently published “A Time and Place, Media Architecture”, a monograph on Moeller’s work from 1991-2003. Christian Moeller has received numerous awards and his work has been exhibited worldwide.
