Description:

In the central plaza area of the W Hollywood Hotel & Residences, Christian Moeller installed a monumental work integrated into the East wall along the red carpet. The primary material is anodized aluminum. The artist manipulated the material to deliver the perception of the image using digital means. The relief of the sculptural wall makes an image in “bitmap graphics”, created by casting shadows on the surface. Perception of the texture and imagery varies depending on the viewer’s point of view. Up close, the texture reads more abstractly, and yet from even a slight distance, the clarity of the image is apparent.

Artist Profile

Born in 1959 in Frankfurt am Main, Christian Moeller studied architecture at the College of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt and as a scholarship holder under Gustav Peichel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After working in the Stuttgart architect’s office of Behnisch and Partner, he commenced as guest artist in Peter Weibel’s Institute for New Media in the Städel School in Frankfurt. In 1990, he founded his own architect’s office and media laboratory in Frankfurt. From 1995 to 1997, he headed the ARCHEMEDIA research institute at the College of Design in Linz, Austria. He founded his own studio and media laboratory in 1990 in Frankfurt and in 2001 moved his practice to Los Angeles where he now lives and works. Lars Müller Publishers recently published “A Time and Place, Media Architecture”, a monograph on Moeller’s work from 1991-2003. Christian Moeller has received numerous awards and his work has been exhibited worldwide.
