Description:

Yoshikawa is known for making sculpture that creates a sense of tranquility through the skillful manipulation of form, color, and texture. His stone waterfalls are noted for the refinement of the sound they create, reminiscent of a mountain brook.

This North Hollywood project is comprised of three granite water sculptures surrounding the residential entrance to the building complex. Overall, the artist sought to create visual continuity and flow to address the aesthetic problem of “prescribed space.” His intention was to create sculptural waterfalls that integrate with the architecture, yet create a counterpoint for the enjoyment of viewers.

The “umbrella” fountain component, near the Cumpston Street entrance, is composed of a granite table supported by a central column. The edges of the table are incised, enabling the water to flow through the cuts directly onto the concave floor below. Six small floor lights illuminate the water curtain with the outer perimeter of the floor surface mirroring the diameter of the basin.

The “single column stream” component is near the Cumpston Street entrance and the “waterfall” component is near the Tujunga Avenue entrance. The latter two components are comprised of the sculptural elements that appear to mysteriously allow water to flow through walls and disappear through pools of glass tile and river rock..

Artist Profile

D. Yoshikawa Wright is a local artist who earned his BFA from the University of Colorado and furthered his artistic education by studying abroad. More commonly known as “Yoshikawa,” his work is featured in public and private gardens throughout the United States. His most significant public commission was completed in 2008 for the Los Angeles Fallen Firefighter Memorial, which was acclaimed for its skillful integration with a historical firehouse, and for creating a dignified and peaceful setting for the remembrance of the fallen.
