Description:

Soaring into the air from its stepped, black pedestal, Waterwall is a bluish green sculpture made out of thick laminated glass plates evenly stacked in an upright position. The surface of the glass plate edges is chipped so that the rich bluish-green hue of the glass and wavy surface texture are evocative of water waves. The sculpture stands in the middle is a fountain, located in the pedestrian walkway tucked between Hope Street and The Metropolitan's lobby.

Artist Profile

DeWain Valentine was born in 1936 in Fort Collins, Colorado. A purist in regard to his use of material and form, the artist is particularly interested in the dissolution of physical form into shifting illusions of color and light. Valentine finds endless inspiration from the “transparent colored space” of the sky and sea. Often the artist’s works act as frames for these sections of sky, landscape, or seascapes. Valentine’s public installations include: Skyline, Barnsdall Park, Los Angeles; Sunset Spectrum, Long Beach Museum; and i, California State University, Northridge. The artist’s works have been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; La Jolla Museum of Modern Art; Contemporary Art Center, Honolulu; and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Valentine lives and works in Venice, California.
