Description:

A symphony of marbles, acrylic grid punched copper, etched glass, patterned glass, dichroic glass, mouth-blown glass, and plate glass, Ed Carpenter’s "Renaissance Tower Lobby Window" is and consists of 20 panels, each approximately 43" x 25". Shades of bright blue, yellow, and orange energize the cheerful geometric patterns reminiscent of intricate textile patterns. The thick colors of the glass dramatically dim the natural lighting, creating a hushed space in the lobby of this apartment building. The "Renaissance Tower Lobby Window" hovers over the apartment mailboxes, giving an appropriate amount of subdued natural lighting and privacy.

Artist Profile

Artist Ed Carpenter specializes in large-scale public installations ranging from architectural sculpture to infrastructure design. Since 1973, he has completed scores of projects for public, corporate, and ecclesiastical clients. Working internationally from his studio in Portland, Oregon, he is known as an eager and open-minded collaborator as well as technical innovator. His use of cold bent tempered glass, encapsulated glass elements, programmed artificial lighting, and unusual tension structures has broken new ground in architectural art. The artist’s list of commissions is extensive and includes work throughout the United States and Asia. His most recent accomplishments include artworks for the Sky Harbor and George Bush International Airport. Carpenter is grandson of a painter/sculptor and stepson of an architect in whose office he worked summers as a teenager. He studied architectural glass art under artists in England and Germany during the early 1970s, and now lives with his wife and two children in the Coast Range Mountains located west of Portland.
