Description:

Jutting out from the small landscaped area between the sidewalk and building on Hope Street, is Gary Dwyer's visually stunning sculpture of white Carrara marble, sandstone, soil, and sod. The 16'h x 25'w x 50'd sculpture is constituted by several layers of white jagged edged slabs piled one on top of each other in a stepped pattern: this, and the sharp angle at which the slabs jut from the earth, give the sculpture the appearance of being a result of a dramatic tectonic shift.

Artist Profile

Los Angeles-based artist Gary Dwyer has over twenty years of global experience working in a variety of landscape, sculpture and photographic genres.  Dwyer has been awarded several international commissions including a monument to articulate the site of an ancient spring in Limousin for the French Ministry of Culture and to design and construct a memorial for the last battle of World War II in Slovenia for the Eastern European Artists Union.  The artist’s photographic assignments have sent him on climbing expeditions from Nepal’s Himalayas to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, which brought him to the attention of UNESCO who in 1994 commissioned Dwyer to assist UNESCO in photographing World Heritage Sites in Hue, Vietnam.  Dwyer is currently a professor of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
