Description:

As a part of HeArt Project's year-round arts program, a three-week mural workshop for 60 high school students was supported through a grant. These workshops led to the creation of a mural on three roll-down doors at Broadway and 5th Street. Three well-known visual artists, Diane Gamboa, Leo Limon, and Yolanda Gonzalez, worked with students from continuation high schools to complete the mural. The mural interprets the theme "imagine culture." Painting took place between June 3-17, 1996 at the old Newberry building.

Artist Profile

Founded in 1992 by Cynthia Campoy Brophy, the HeArt Project was created to address the lack of arts education programs for Los Angeles teenagers, specifically teenagers in alternative high schools who have dropped out, been expelled, incarcerated, and/or are teen parents. The HeArt Project partners these troubled youths with professional artists, cultural centers, and communities to imagine, produce, and present new artworks. The HeArt Project has received widespread recognition for its work by the California Arts Council, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Evaluations of the Project’s effects on the students have repeatedly revealed an outstanding positive influence on scholarship and graduation, along with demonstrated improvement in in personal responsibility, community participation, and communication skills.
