Description:

A series of large grants from the CRA’s Downtown Cultural Trust Fund were provided to Inner-City Arts to support a significant expansion of their campus. Inner City Arts is a creative haven where elementary school-aged urban students can explore their creativity in both the visual and performing arts. The new building was designed by renowned Los Angeles based architect Michael Maltzan. Inner City Arts fulfills the lack of arts education support in many schools located in areas hardest hit by cuts in arts education funding.

Artist Profile

Inner-City Arts was founded in 1989 in response to funding cuts that eliminated arts instruction from Los Angeles public schools. Bob Bates, Artistic Director and Co-Founder, saw the need to offer at-risk children the opportunity to experience the power of creativity. In an ongoing partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Inner-City Arts now offers creative courses and arts education to the children in and around Los Angeles’ Skid Row area. By validating the creative impulses and uniqueness of each student, Inner-City Arts provides a bridge between the artistic experience and the development of the student as well as increasing academic achievement.
