Venice/Hope Park
2002
Project Area: CBD/South Park
Project: Venice/Hope Park
Project Location: NW corner of Venice Blvd and Hope Street
Project Type: CRA Initiated and Cultural Trust Fund
Description:
Working collaboratively with landscape architect Pat Smith, artist Jacqueline Dreager created a number of art elements throughout this urban park: 1) painted steel fence cut-outs of stylized ancient insects, lizards, worms and entry gates with serpent images; 2) an elaborate paving mosaic (made by Jose Antonio and residents of Wasco State Prison through the Arts-in-Correction Program) based on "Patolli", an Aztec game of chance; 3) a tortoise-shaped topiary; and 4) cast resin insets in the park's concrete benches created with area youth.
