Artist Profile

Artist and author J. Michael Walker is originally from Oklahoma.  Over thirty years ago, the artist traveled to Mexico, met his future wife, and became inspired to immerse himself in rural Mexican culture.  Walker’s interest in local history enticed him to begin researching the several dozen streets in Los Angeles named for saints.  This ongoing project, “All the Saints of the City of the Angels,” has received four grants from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and one from the California Council for the Humanities.  His work is comprised in book form and illustrated with Walker’s collection of large-scale mixed-media paintings.  Walker has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University; the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art at Harvard University; the National Museum of Catholic Art History in New York City; and El Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares in Mexico City.  The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
