Ninomiya Kinjiro
1983

Project Area: Little Tokyo
Project: Mitsui Manufacturer's Bank
Project Location: 200 S. San Pedro Street
Project Type: Developer

Description:

Located in front of the Mitsui Manufacturers Bank, stands an enlarged 6'h bronze replica of the small statue placed in elementary schools throughout Japan prior to World War II. The small statues are based on an iconographic portrayal of Ninomiya Sontoku at about age 14 learning how to read while carrying a load of firewood on his back. This statue was initially used as a reminder to children of the ideal of combining work and study.
