Description:

Appropriately, Overall hangs overhead the top flight of stairs and escalators in the Citicorp Plaza. Overall, a collaboration between poet Carolyn Kizer and conceptual artist Lawrence Wiener, consists of four large rectangular sheets of copper placed on an architectural support beam facing the escalators and stairs. Text from the poem is punched through the sheets, and lettering cut out of the two middle panels. The pieces of copper fit together closely, except for a hole formed by the middle panels at the center. Subtly, as if in a dream, the artwork's presence reveals itself to the shopper as he or she slowly move along the escalator or staircases.

Artist Profile

Born in New York in 1942, Lawrence Wiener was arguably one of the first artists to “dematerialize” the physical object of art into the domain of ideas and language. His studio practice is based on the idea that an artist can draw on any material and present it as art without altering the material or taking it out of its everyday context. For over forty years, the artist has been creating sculptures using text as his imagery. Recently the artist has been featured in several solo exhibitions around the world including Cristinga Guerra in Lisbon, Portugal; Alfonso Artico in Naples, Italy; Balwag Foundation in Wien, Austria; Lisson Gallery in London, England; and Mai 36 Galerie in Zurich, Germany. The artist is currently represented by Regen Projects in Los Angeles where he continues to exhibit on a regular basis.
