Originally located at Staples Center, Mark Lere's Untitled Four has been relocated to a park-like setting at the USC campus. This piece is a four-part site installation based on the four senses: seeing, touching, hearing, and smelling. One element is a 48" h and 140" d cone shaped Corten steel fountain. Its upper surface is cast in bronze to resemble a pool of water with rings emanating from the fountain’s source. Another element is a 6’ d stainless steel sphere created by a "spun" metal system. The surface is polished to a high reflective quality and mounted on a 4" d stainless steel pole. The third element is a "sound rock" bench cut from local gray granite. A downloadable audio podcast from USC iTunes accompanies this piece. The fourth element is a bio-morphic 12’h tall human form. This element was created by bronze casting and has an interior light box from where light emanates through approximately 100 holes on the sculpture's surface.

Artist Profile

With a playful approach, Mark Lere is able to create contemplative spaces drawing on the viewer’s sense of touch, sound, and sight. He has exhibited his sculptures at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; University of California, Irvine; North Dakota Museum of Art; and the Temple Gallery, Temple University, Philadelphia. Major commissions of the artist’s sculptural work include: Microsoft Corporation, San Francisco; GSA Border Station, Calexico; California Plaza, Ventura; and Seattle Scatter, Washington. Lere is currently working on public art projects for Santa Monica; Los Angeles Metro Transportation Division 9 Headquarters Rail Department; Warner Center Sculpture Park, Thousand Oaks; and the Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta. Originally from North Dakota, Lere studied art at the Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado (BFA) and later at the University of California, Irvine (MFA). The artist lives and works in Glendale, California.
