Michael Tansey
Daffodil Metamorphosis
1996
Project Area: CT-South Park
Project: Daffodil Metamorphosis
Project Location: LA Live Way between 11th Street and Olympic Boulevard
Project Type: CRA/LA Initiated
Description:
Michael Tansey’s cast aluminum and steel sculpture Daffodil Metamorphosis is a fanciful renovation of a 34’ h air raid siren used during the cold war. Tansey’s bright yellow daffodil petals bloom from the siren’s speakers, bringing tidings of peace and renewal instead of the perils of war. The daffodil was chosen for its tradition of being the first flower of spring to bloom. The concept for Daffodil Metamorphosis comes from the idea of taking a symbol from the cold war era and turning it into a symbol for the future. It is located on LA Live Way heading towards Olympic Blvd, on the left side near the 110 Harbor Freeway.
