Michael Tansey
Daffodil Metamorphosis
1996

Project Area: CBD/South Park
Project: Daffodil Metamorphosis
Project Location: LA Live campus between Olympic and 11th towards the 110 Harbor Freeway
Project Type: Cultural Trust Fund
Description:

Michael Tansey’s cast aluminum & steel sculpture Daffodil Metamorphosis is a fanciful renovation of a 34’ h air raid siren used during the cold war.  Tansey’s bright yellow daffodil petals bloom from the siren’s speakers, bringing tidings of peace and renewal instead of the perils of war. The daffodil was chosen for its tradition of being the first flower of spring to bloom. The concept for Daffodil Metamorphosis comes from the idea of taking a symbol from the cold war era and turning it into a symbol for the future.  Located in the LA Live campus between Olympic Blvd. and 11th St. and between Cherry St. and Georgia St., Daffodil Metamorphosis is currently most visible from the 110 Harbor Freeway.  Once LA Live construction is completed, the daffodil siren will once again be more accessible to the public.
