Description:

"Starbursts" was inspired by the great Hollywood director, Busby Berkeley. The finale dance scene of his 1934 film "Dames" illustrates his celebrated overhead camera shot. In this scene, one hundred girls in black tights and frilly white blouses fragment and transform themselves into kaleidoscopic patterns and abstract geometric designs. Pat Ward Williams incorporates this kaleidoscopic image on the floor of levels one and two. The images are photo-etched onto black granite. The overall images are best seen from the upper level.

Artist Profile

Pat Ward Williams is a respected photographer with a BFA from the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.  Williams has received several awards including a Fulbright Regional Research Fellowship, California Community Foundation, Getty Trust Fellowship Individual Artists Grant, Ford Foundation Grant, and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships.  The artist has exhibited extensively and internationally at venues such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; 1993 Whitney Biennial Exhibition, New York; Whitney Biennial in Korea, Museum of Modern Art, Seoul, Korea; Museu da Gravura Cidade de Curitiba, Brazil; and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen Denmark.  Other public artworks by Williams are the Gilbert Lindsay Memorial for the Los Angeles Convention Center and the Lake Avenue Light Rail Station in Pasadena, California. The artist lives in Long Beach and is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of California, Irvine.
