Description:

Alongside the entrance of an office building at Citicorp Plaza trails a series of "Puddles" by Peter Alexander. The puddles are made of cast glass, lit from within by fiber optic lighting. Each pool flickers with the intensely introspective words of interpretive Japanese 15th century poetry by Ikkyu Shonin inscribed in each puddle. At night, the puddles glow, making the faint words of the day become clearer.

Crazy as a cloud, who knows
where the wind will blow me?
This morning in the mountains,
tonight in the city.
If just once I did right
things at the right time,
It would make my teachers blush.

Artist Profile

Peter Alexander is a Los Angeles-based artist who received his formal training at the University of California, Los Angeles. Alexander’s numerous international group exhibitions include: Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Diego Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Corcoran Gallery of Art; Walker Art Center; Documenta ’72, Germany; Auckland City Art Museum, New Zealand; and the Musee d’Art Moderne, France. Peter Alexander’s works can be found in various public collections that include: J. Paul Getty Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art; Akron Art Institute; Fort Worth Art Museum; Metropolitan Museum; New Orleans Museum of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and the Walker Art Center.
