Peter Lodato
Silver Tower
1991
Project Area: Little Tokyo
Project: Brunswig Square
Project Location: 360 E. Second Street
Project Type: Developer
Description:
Stainless steel obelisks from the artist's "Wrathful Means" series of paintings and sculptures depict the power and ferocity of Mahakala, the protector of Lamism. "Silver Tower" is 25'h x 21"w and is equal in height to the building at its rear. According to Lodato, the rippled finish of the obelisk "reflects the energy invested by the craftsmen who worked the surface." Lodato and the architect, Donald Barany, collaborated in integrating the sculpture with the 20' x 24' patio at Brunswig Square. They determined the sculpture's height, added signage, planters and seating in the patio, and framed the building's retail entrances with neon lighting.
