Description:

"Mirage" is a fountain designed to resemble a coiled snake. A central shaft holds a desert scene in hand-painted tile. Two eggs, one in the fountain and one on the shaft are glass mosaic. The bench, "Ancient Fossils" incorporates mosaic tiles to form mirror images of four lizard-like reptiles. "Los Angeles Basin, circa 1876" is a set of tiles across a wall painted with images of a long line of ants in a desert-like setting leaving their hole on one side to a hole on the other side of the wall. "Birds of the Southwest" features images of birds and decorative lettering that intermingle with the poetry inscribed on the pergolas.

Artist Profile

Artist Raul Guerrero has been an important presence in the San Diego/Tijuana region for over twenty years. He received his formal training at the Chouinard Art Institute where he earned his BFA in 1970. Creating paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and videotapes, Guerrero’s ever-evolving visions combine technical innovation with symbolic power. Although the artist’s style ranges from early conceptually based abstraction to recent narrative realism, Guerrero’s self-described “search for the poetry of life” is a constant in all of his works. Guerrero continually engages the histories of culture through his travels in the United States, Latin America, and Europe from which he culls images and ideas for his art. The artist lives and works in San Diego.
