Richard Thomas
Untitled Fountain
1984

Project Area: Bunker Hill
Project: Sheraton Grand Hotel (Marriott Hotel)
Project Location: 333 S. Figueroa Street
Project Type: Developer

Description:

Like a frozen waterfall, Richard Thomas's "Untitled Fountain" features a stunning 18'h x 52'l x 3'd wall of clear acrylic tubes that run along the driveway of the Hotel. Reminiscent of "Finish Fetish" and "Light and Space" techniques of West Coast Minimalism in the 1960s and 70s, the fountain's materials interact with the changing properties of light: in the day, the tubes have a bluish cast, giving them an icy and cool appearance; at night, the tubes are illuminated by fiery gold lights, giving them a warmer appearance.
