Description:

Crowning a small plaza area at the top of the stairs between the US Bank Tower and Citigroup building is a dramatic sculptural fountain. At the top of the fountain's tall pedestal is a three-tiered column on which a bronze nude of an African-American female stands. The pedestal is set within a circular pool centered by a trio of crabs resting on the pedestal's base. This plaza is also accessible from Hope Street at Hope Place.

Artist Profile

Born in Mexico City, Robert Graham (1938-2008) earned his BA from San Jose State College and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Graham’s work has been the subject of over eighty solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Mexico. His work can be found in many national and international museum collections. Some of Graham’s most recognized civic monuments include the Los Angeles Olympic Gateway (1984), the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Washington D.C (1997), and The Great Bronze Doors for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles (2002). In 1993, Robert Graham received the ACLU Freedom of Speech Award and the California Governor’s Award for his outstanding contribution to the Arts. In 2005, Graham was the recipient of the Hope of Los Angeles Award, Latino Heritage Month, City of Los Angeles.
