Description:

(De-installed) Affixed to a wall, this 5'h x 171/2 'w semi-abstract bronze bas-relief depicts people holding hands or embracing each other, communicating the themes of peace and friendship. It was removed to make room for new storefronts. A new location for Harmony is being sought.

Artist Profile

Sawako Shintani was born in 1939 in Kobe, Japan to a family of artists. In 1962, Shintani received her BFA in sculpture at the Kyoto University of Fine Arts followed by additional studies in sculpture and ceramics at the Chouinard Art School.  The artist has sculpted in a variety of mediums including wood, concrete, and bronze.  In recent years, she has focused her attention on working in ceramics.  Harmony is Shintani's first public artwork in the United States.  Shintani has lived in Los Angeles since 1970.
