Description:

Artist Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend designed an elaborate concrete and tile paving pattern at the entrance, both the exterior and interior, to the Madrid Theater in Canoga Park. Together with the theater's expansive glass front, the design gives an illusion of spaciousness and adds color, texture and vibrancy. This project resurrects the great tradition of elaborate terrazzo pavings created for historic theaters in the early 1900s.

Artist Profile

Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend was born in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1966-1972, she studied at Hood College, Indiana University, and the University of Texas. In 1982, the artist received a National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowship. Stinsmuehlen-Amend’s works are in the public collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art, Tacoma; Detroit Institute of the Arts; the Jewish Museum; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Wagga Wagga City Art Gallery, New South Wales, Australia; Nishida Museum, Toyoma, Japan; and the Voss & Partner, TV-Ateliers, Dusseldorf, Germany. The artist lives and works in Ojai, California.
