Located on the ceiling of the Figueroa Street entrance to the 7th/Metro MTA Metro Rail Station portal is Terry Schoonhoven's trompe l'oeil mural "City Above." When riding the escalator to the station one's view of the mural changes. By framing each painted panel in an oval, Schoonhoven was able to bring fantasy to his composition by incorporating forced perspectives and by rendering the ceiling as a sky, the building disappears. The "City Above" portrays diversity of workers and visitors in Downtown. Look closely and you will see the artist depicted as a "wino" wrapped up in a blanket.

Artist Profile

Artist Terry Schoonhoven was born in Freeport, Illinois in 1945. He received his BS from the University of Wisconsin in 1967, completed two years of graduate work in art, and taught lithography at the University of California, Los Angeles before co-founding the Los Angeles Fine Arts Squad with Victor Henderson in 1969. The Squad’s mission was to paint large exterior murals seven of which were completed in the Los Angeles region before disbanding in 1974. The artist was the recipient of the California Arts Council Special Projects Grant in 1978 and a National Endowment for the Arts Artists Fellowship in 1980. Schoonhoven is in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; San Antonio Museum of Art; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; and the Australian National Gallery, Canberra.
