Description:

Three large and colorful chandeliers by the artist Therman Statom hover over the escalators and landings in the cathedral like space of the Bradley Wing Atrium. These playful chandeliers humanize the otherwise intimidating height of the architecturally austere atrium. Each chandelier is covered in painterly strokes from a light palette, making the immense chandeliers seem to float in the air. Whimsical subjects such as carrots, birds, and angels are perched on each chandelier according to different themes such as "Natural", "Technological" and "Ethereal". These larger than life sculpted subjects run the gamut from the mundane to the ethereal.

Artist Profile

Having formally studied sculpture, Therman Statom received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1974 and his MFA in sculpture from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 1978.  Statom has been awarded numerous grants including two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1982, 1998), a City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Grant (1997), a Brody Arts Foundation Fellowship (1985), and a Pratt Institute Fellowship (1978).  In addition to his public artworks in Los Angeles, Statom has received commissions from the Toledo Museum of Art; New York State Arts Commission, Bronx; Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts; and Harrah’s Casino in Las Vegas.  The artist’s works are in the permanent collections of the California African-American Museum, Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Arts; High Museum of Art; Mint Museum of Craft and Design; Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre, Paris; Musée de Design et d’Arts Appliqués Contemporains, Lausanne, Switzerland; and the US Department of State, Art in Embassies Program, Moscow.  The artist maintains studios in San Diego, California and Omaha, Nebraska.
