Building & Other Permit Approval

The Little Tokyo Redevelopment Plan requires CRA/LA's review and approval of any permit application before the Department of Building and Safety can issue a building permit.  The Little Tokyo Redevelopment Plan contains, among other provisions, development standards regarding density, design and permitted land uses.  Developers and contractors are strongly advised to contact Karen Yamamoto, City Planner at (213) 977-1753, or Dennis Hance, Principal Planner at (213) 977-1798.

Planning & Designs Guidelines

In line with a state Senate effort to preserve California’s Japantowns, Planning and Design Guidelines for Little Tokyo were approved Thursday, April 6, by the Board of Commissioners of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA).

The planning and design guidelines will help ensure that the Little Tokyo Redevelopment Project Area and a few surrounding blocks, including a portion of the Arts District, will contain architectural elements, signage and building materials identified with the Japanese culture and help preserve it as a culturally unique neighborhood.
