Common Threads with LACPS
Hidden Labor:  Uncovering L.A.'s Garment Industry
1997

Project Area: CBD/Historic Core
Project: Window Installations (Temporary)
Project Location: 606 W. Seventh Street
Project Type: CRA Initiated

Description:

Common Threads Artist Group with L.A. Center for Photographic Studies organized a year-long installation in nine storefronts. Installed in display windows of a closed department store on the edge of L.A.'s Garment District, "Hidden Labor" presented an intimate and chronological account of L.A.'s garment workers since the late 19th century. Several dozen retired and present-day garment workers were interviewed. Photos, a timeline, and other items were gathered to form this exhibition. Artists include Rozanne Auer, Judy Branfman, Eva Crockcroft, Leslie Ernst, Mary Linn Hughes, Alessandra Moctezuma, Sheila Pinkel, and Leda Ramos.
