Description:

As part of its negotiated agreement for the California Plaza development, CRA/LA required the property owners to provide a performing arts program.  With seed funding for construction of the performance plaza and an annual revenue stream established through this agreement, Grand Performances was established as a non-profit to present programming that reflects the best of global culture and inspire community among the diverse peoples of Los Angeles.  Forty to sixty free performances each summer draw in an average annual audience of 65,000 to experience an eclectic mix of performing arts disciplines.  All events are presented free-to-the-public, enabling entire families, seniors, schools, youth groups and others to enjoy the performing arts regardless of their financial ability.

Artist Profile

Grand Performances is revered as Los Angeles’ premier presenter of free outdoor summer performances, featuring high quality local and touring artists presented with the finest technical support with the most diverse audience in the country.  It has been awarded the International Downtown Association’s top honor for using festivals and special events to re-invigorate Los Angeles’ Downtown.  Grand Performances is respected in the local community for its commitment to supporting and presenting local artists and introducing them to broader audiences.  At the California Plaza stages, Grand Performances has hosted a variety of world-class performers:  Kronos Quartet, Hugh Masekela, Pink Martini, ¡Cubanismo!, Beijing Modern Dance Company, and the Ballet Nacional de Mexico.  Some of the locally-based artists featured have included El Vez, Ozomatli, The Watts Prophets, Culture Clash, Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, and the Diavolo Dance Theatre.
