Chinatown Medallions
Painted aluminum with red polypropylene rope
2011
Project Area: Chinatown
Project: Chinatown Medallion Project
Project Location: Various locations along Broadway, Hill St., Spring St., and Cesar Chavez Blvd.
Project Type: CRA/LA Initiated
Description:
Brilliant red aluminum medallions display the Chinese characters for Prosperity, Longevity, Harmony, and Wisdom. The characters are rendered in traditional calligraphy and are repeated on forty-five City street light poles along the Broadway, Hill, Spring, and Cesar Chavez corridors. Also integrated into the Chinatown Dragon Gateway, these images reinforce their positive greeting to residents and visitors. The medallions are further adorned with hanging rope tassels that reference Feng Shui lucky charms. Funding and assistance was provided by CRA/LA along with the Historic & Cultural Neighborhood Council and the Chinatown Business Improvement District.
